On February 6, 2023 Southern Türkiye experienced two severe earthquakes, resulting in severe loss of life and damage in many Turkish cities and towns.
The long term effects, particularly for the local economies in the earthquake zone remain uncertain. Over the past decade, the Center and its partners have explored alternative business models as ways to address economic and social needs in local communities. Specifically, the Center has partnered with Genç İşi Kooperatif (Youth Deal Cooperative) on several projects exploring the jpotential benefits of the Cooperative (Co-op) business model.
In the wake of the tragedy, Genç İşi Kooperatif identified a need to conduct a rapid assessment of cooperatives operating in the earthquake zone and their needs and intent going forward. The Hollings Center sponsored this initiative and the report is now available in Turkish and English. It identifies key areas for needed intervention.
In the coming months, the Center looks forward to continuing its partnership with YDC on issues of cooperative resiliency and earthquake recovery.
